How Distroo Helps Nominees With a Claim

A death claim is a sensitive moment. Here is how your Advisor supports the nominee through the process. The insurer makes the claim decision.

Step 01

Nominee Intimation

The nominee informs the insurer and tells your Advisor. We explain the steps and the documents the insurer will need.

Step 02

Document Preparation

We help the family gather the death certificate, hospital records, KYC documents and the claim form, so that the submission is complete.

Step 03

Submission to the Insurer

The claim is submitted to the insurer with all required documents. Insurers must follow IRDAI's policyholder protection timelines for settlement.

Step 04

Follow-Up & Queries

Your Advisor helps the nominee respond to insurer queries and, if needed, use the insurer's grievance process.

Step 05

Settlement

If the claim is admitted, the insurer pays the sum assured to the nominee, usually by direct bank transfer.

Policy Add-Ons

Riders That Add Living Benefits

A term plan pays on death. Riders can add benefits during your lifetime for accidents and serious illness. They cost extra and have their own definitions.

Accident Cover

Accidental Death & Disability Rider

Pays an additional amount if death is caused by an accident, or a benefit on permanent disability as defined in the rider.

Living Benefit

Critical Illness Rider

Pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed critical illness that meets the policy definition, subject to waiting and survival periods.

Premium Relief

Waiver of Premium

If you suffer a disability or illness as defined in the rider, future premiums are waived and the cover continues.

Terminal Illness

Terminal Illness Benefit

Some plans pay part or all of the sum assured early if you are certified with a terminal illness, as defined in the policy.

Frequently Asked Questions on Life & Term Insurance

Answers about sum assured, claims and tax benefits.

There is no single number. Start from your family's needs: the income your dependants rely on, plus loans and goals such as education, minus existing savings and cover. A common rule of thumb is 10 to 20 times annual income. For example, with an annual income of ₹12 lakh and a ₹40 lakh home loan, 15 times income plus the loan comes to about ₹2.2 crore. Your Advisor will refine this with your actual goals.
Most life insurers allow a grace period of 30 days (15 days for monthly mode) after the due date, during which cover generally continues. If you do not pay, the policy may lapse. It can usually be revived within the period the insurer allows, after paying dues and meeting its conditions. Check your policy for details.
A pure term plan pays the sum assured if the insured dies during the term, from natural causes, illness or accident, subject to the policy's terms and exclusions. Riders can add benefits for accidental death, disability and critical illness at extra cost.
Under income tax law, sums received on the death of the insured are generally exempt in the hands of the nominee (Section 10(10D) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, and its counterpart in the Income-tax Act, 2025). Premiums may qualify for a deduction under Section 80C up to the prescribed limit if you choose the old tax regime. Tax rules change, so please confirm with a tax adviser.
Section 45 of the Insurance Act, 1938 says that a life insurance policy generally cannot be called in question on any ground after three years from issue or revival. Within the first three years, an insurer may question a policy on grounds such as fraud or misstatement of a material fact, but it must communicate its grounds in writing. Accurate disclosure at the start is the best protection.
